Pokémon is so much more than just a series of core video games. Those are an essential part, of course, but then so too is everything from the trading card game and animé to movies and cafés!
Even within those boundaries, there’s been such variety that one could spend their whole life playing these different variations on the same theme. Legendary roleplaying adventures or handheld recreations of arcade pinball at home; virtual photography expeditions, Pokémon has something for everyone across all platforms.
When we are at home, and we find ourselves bored, what do we usually do? The answer is simple. We turn to our favorite video game console and start playing a game. But how can you make the best decision about which one to play? Will it be an old-school title or will it compete with the amazing games found in this BorgataOnline article?
Well, we are here to help! Here we will be looking at some of the Pokémon games that have been released (so far). Some of these games may not be as well known as others, but they are still worth checking out! So without further ado, let’s get started!
Pokémon Yellow is generationally the best game. This follow-up lets you have a Charizard and all other Starter Pokémon too. We are not sure why people are so hung up on Red being the original Pokémon game. Yellow is where it’s at for this follow-up generation.
Pokémon Yellow, released in 1999, is an all-time winner. This game is iconic as the only Pokémon that doesn’t allow you to pick your starter at the beginning of their journey! All other Pokémon are available, except mini Mew (but don’t worry about him because he makes a return later on).
In Pokémon Colosseum, you play as a former criminal who decided the best way to cut ties with his former associates was by blowing up their base and ‘borrowing’ a device they use for stealing other trainers’ Pokémon.
Attempts at lying low afterward are ruined when he saves Rui. A woman who can see auras around people or objects to learn about shadow-type monsters that have been cast from behind them into our world without being seen themselves because of what I assume are dark powers at work here?
Pokémon Colosseum is an excellent game for beginners because it has good stats, an easy-to-understand interface, and STAB Fire Blast. This move set will KO almost every Pokémon you’ll come across except Steel types or those who are already immune to FIRE attack effects!
Pokémon Snap would be great if it weren’t so bad. It is a game of capturing imaginary creatures. But don’t be fooled! You’ll need to break the ethics of nature photography to take pictures with your Pokémon camera.
You can only use it if your players are not happy – which can sometimes mean tricking them into battling each other so that one may evolve into another species more efficiently.
Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby
Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby are the best Pokémon games to play on modern consoles. There’s a reason why Hoenn is so heavy with water-type Pokémon. It does feel like an unmatched lushness of nature in this region, helped by some lovely tiny 3D graphics!
The world of Hoenn is a great place to explore, with its lush forests and deep lakes. But there’s more than just nature waiting for you in this region: it boasts some exciting Pokémon too! You can’t go wrong when trying out Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire on modern consoles.
A lot has been said about the balance between water-type Pokémon and their counterparts elsewhere across all three games from Generation I-IV. At the same time, these struggles might have been magnified due to location then type imbalance – something that exists within these oceans being home primarily to Wailord Chansey.
Pokémon’s 3D origins lie in Stadium for N64, a rather simplistic turn-based battler where you can use your favorite creatures and fight gym leaders to become the champion.
Looking at the game now, though, there isn’t much here – just some simple battles with other players or computer-controlled characters. But its brilliance lay not only in connecting between games but also in having certain moves work if players battled before and helped create an ecosystem unlike any other game at that time.
The story behind Pokémon began when Nintendo released their 64 Bit console in 1996.
The game was initially called Capsule Monsters, and it was created by Satoshi Tajiri, who grew up collecting insects in his birthplace of Tokyo. The game didn’t get its international moniker, Pokémon, until the late 1990s. The name Pokémon came from the Japanese name ‘Poketto’ meaning pocket or pocketbook, where a person’s captured monsters were usually kept (in Tajiri’s mind, anyway).
Pokémon Crystal is closer to Gold and Silver than the other enhanced version so that we can bundle them together – what a fantastic duo!
Did anything match your “princess in another castle” surprise when you realized how visitable Kanto was by train? Or did it make fighting Red at the end of post-game seem like less of a challenge with nerves creeping up on you while battling deep inside Mt. Silver? The question isn’t as odd as it seems; after all, don’t we all want to be a princess sometimes?
Johto remains a sumptuously beautiful, autumnal region in the Pokémon games. The original pixel art of these versions is something to behold – a watercolor for your eyes with each step you take through it!
We are looking forward instead of back on this journey to find what made us fall in love with the concept. We would say catching Caterpie before eventually evolving into Butterfree or thwarting Whitney’s gym battle by sending out Tynamo first against her Wattson-level Electric types. All the while still managing not only two other Pokémon but also items like hyper potions.
We hope Crystal Edition starts strong for Pokémon GO players because we want nothing but happiness throughout their journey across all three versions.
Finally, Detective Pikachu
The first Detective Pikachu (3DS) game is one of the best-told stories set in a universe where humans and Pokémon coexist. There’s a mystery to solve, making it exciting and engaging because we want to know what happens next.
The movie version did well at establishing this before going off track with other things like plot holes or just being plain weird (seriously).
Pokémon is an absolute mainstay in the gaming world and we’re sure it’s just going to get better and better. What are your favorite Pokémon games to play?
