The Suzuki Swift 2018 compact hatchback arrived to South Africa. The model has always been a popular car in the country, so there are high hopes for this version as well. Andre Venter, the divisional manager for sales and marketing at Suzuki Auto South Africa, shared the enthusiasm, “The all-new Swift has big shoes to fill. It follows on two generations of our most popular model, which had sold over 19 000 units to date. In fact, the previous Swift was so popular that it reached its peak sales volume of 2 966 units in 2017, the last full year in which it was sold.” More than 6 million units were sold around the world.

What is New?

The 2018 Swift has a fresh look and a new platform. When it comes to dimensions, it is 10 mm shorter, and 40 mm wider. The front track is widened by 40 mm, while the rear is 35 mm wider. The whole wheelbase is extended, making the new car nearly as long as the Suzuki Ciaz sedan. All of these dimension changes also mean that the interior is also increased, while the company says how the rear passengers have more headroom. Front passengers on the other hand benefit have more room for the shoulders. All passengers inside now sit a bit lower.

Over the decades, perhaps the biggest criticism when it comes to Suzuki Swift was the very limited and small capacity for luggage. On the Suzuki Swift 2018, the trunk space has been increased by 58 liters. It now stands at 268 liters. In addition, the seats now fold down in a 60 / 40 split. What is more, one of the biggest new benefits of the car’s new platform is the weight reduction, as the Japanese company claims that their new Swift 2018 is 95 kg lighter than the previous version of the model.

Engines

When power plants are concerned, the Swift 2018 is running on the same 1.2 – liter, 4 – cylinder petrol engine as the older car. The car also has a reputation of both the punch and fuel consumption, which fans quite like overall. On the paper, it produces 61 kW and 113 Nm, while the fuel consumption reads 4.9 L per 100 km. The capacity of the fuel tank is 37 liters. There is a choice of either a five-speed manual gearbox, or the Automated Manual Gearbox, AMT for short. The AMT behaves similarly to a manual gearbox, except the fact that the vehicle controls the operations of the clutch.

Inside of the new Suzuki Swift 2018, there is a sporty steering wheel, a driver-focused speedometer and rev counter, while the GL specific models feature additional chrome accents, as well as a chronograph design of the driving cluster.
